Towards sense of touch for  prosthetic limbs

Researchers at Stanford University have created artificial skin which is able to detect pressure when it gets touched and to send this information directly to a living brain cell.

Although it will take time before this finding can be used in practical applications, it will certainly help improve the capacities of artificial limbs. The finding might be relevant as well for the systems of embodiment in artificial bodies, such as robotic embodiment or avatar embodiment in virtual reality, in which the sense of touch is often missing given its difficulty to implement.
